Yes. Registering for the Foundation level after clearing 12th is the standard school-leaver route. You register with ICAI, complete a study period, then sit the Foundation examination before progressing to Intermediate.
No. Students from science and arts streams can register for Foundation as well. Commerce students start with an advantage on accounting and business law, but the Foundation syllabus is taught from the beginning and non-commerce students clear it every year.
Four to five years is realistic: Foundation, then Intermediate, then two years of articleship, then Final. Four is achievable with no re-attempts; five is the common outcome, and longer is not unusual.
There is no minimum percentage to register for Foundation after 12th — you need to have passed. The marks criterion applies to the direct-entry route, where graduates can skip Foundation if they meet a percentage threshold.
Use it to test the decision rather than only to study. Sit with the ICAI Foundation material for a few weeks and see whether the volume and style suit you, and talk to someone currently in articleship. Five years is a large commitment to make on a career-guide summary.

Instead of textbook exercises, trainees operate the books, bank account, invoices and internal correspondence of simulated companies — M & M Technologies, Toy Kingdom and PetalSoft — where transactions arrive incomplete, out of order and occasionally wrong, exactly as they do in a real office. Trainees learn judgement by making decisions and correcting them, which is the part of the work that cannot be transferred by explanation.
